The Prince graciously paid the bet of 25 guineas. Read more of the story of Cannonball here; http://www.oughterardheritage.org/page_id__11_path__0p4p.aspx

The Connemara Pony, from the past to the future!
Many thanks to Éamonn Mac Lochlainn and John Varley for making the trip up north and providing us with an informative and enjoyable evening. Éamonn gave a talk on the book "The Moycullen Ponymen" by Tom Mac Lochlainn, looking at how the pony was used in days gone past for work and leisure, and its evolving role as a performance pony. Afterwards John Varley spoke about the recent CPBS AGM, and a discussion took place regarding the future of the breed and the society. Although numbers were few, I think I speak for all present when I say it was a very interesting evening, and we look forward to seeing Éamonn and John back in the future, and we wish Tom & Éamonn every success with their book.

THE MOYCULLEN PONYMEN From Working Ponies to International Stars.
The northern Connemara Pony enthusiasts get the chance to buy the newly published book “The Moycullen Ponymen” and meet the auther Tom Mac Lochlainn, a former President of the Connemara Pony Breeders society. Storytelling, working methods and conditions, old photos and verse - all involving the family farm ponies and their owners - fill over 200 pages. The book deals with the history and development of the pony from the mid-20′s to the mid-60′s. Tom deals in detail with the Moycullen ponies, as examples of the breed for throughout all Connemara. He examines the old practices of the ‘dragging home’, posting, and jaunting, and the book will contain scores of old photos that have never been published before. Tom is also accompanied by council member John Varley. All are welcome, 7.30pm Wednesday 6th April 2011, The Meadows Equestrian Centre, Lurgan. Further details can be obtained from Joan Hincliffe Tel: 02866326243
